Counter Pressure Bottle Filler — Instructions
This counter-pressure bottle filler allows you to transfer carbonated beer directly from a keg into bottles while helping maintain carbonation and minimise oxygen exposure and foaming.
Before you begin
Ensure your beer and keg are cold, ideally 1–4°C. Cold beer retains CO₂ better and greatly reduces foaming. Clean and sanitise the bottle filler, beer line and bottles before use.
Connecting the filler
- Connect the beer inlet of the filler to the liquid outlet of your keg.
- Connect the CO₂ inlet to your regulated CO₂ supply.
- As a starting point, use approximately 10–12 PSI, or close to your keg's existing serving/carbonation pressure.
- Ensure the selector valve is in the OFF position before inserting the filler into the bottle.
Filling a bottle
-
Insert the filler
Place the stainless-steel tube into the bottle and press the stopper firmly against the bottle opening to create a seal. -
Purge with CO₂
Turn the selector valve to CO₂. Allow CO₂ to flow to the bottom of the bottle for several seconds. Slightly opening the pressure-relief valve allows the displaced air to escape. -
Pressurise the bottle
Close the pressure-relief valve and allow the bottle to pressurise. The bottle pressure should approach the keg pressure. -
Switch to BEER/FILL
Turn the selector valve to the BEER/FILL position. Because the bottle is pressurised, the beer should initially flow very slowly or not at all. -
Start the fill
Slowly open the adjustable pressure-relief valve. As CO₂ escapes from the bottle, beer will flow down the stainless tube and fill the bottle from the bottom. -
Control the filling speed
Adjust the pressure-relief valve until you achieve a slow, steady fill with minimal foaming. Opening the relief valve further generally increases the filling rate. -
Finish filling
Continue until the beer reaches the neck/top of the bottle. A small amount of foam at the end is desirable when capping. -
Turn the filler OFF
Return the selector valve to the OFF position. -
Release the pressure
Slowly open the pressure-relief valve to release the remaining bottle pressure. Do this gradually to prevent the beer from foaming out of the bottle. -
Remove and cap
Slowly remove the filler from the bottle and cap immediately, preferably while a small amount of foam remains at the bottle opening.
Quick operating sequence
OFF → CO₂ → PURGE → PRESSURISE → BEER → SLOWLY VENT & FILL → OFF → DEPRESSURISE → REMOVE → CAP
Important: Always use bottles designed to withstand the pressure of carbonated beverages. Never use damaged, chipped or cracked bottles. Do not exceed the pressure rating of the bottle, filler, tubing or associated equipment.
Troubleshooting: If the beer is excessively foamy, check that the keg, beer lines and bottles are cold. Then slow the filling rate by reducing how quickly you vent the bottle. Avoid suddenly depressurising a full bottle.
